Za'bolla in the Elections
It is told that there is an Egyptian village called "El Faqrana" (which means a very poor village), the people there were so poor that they sometimes had to share meals to avoid hunger. If you went there, you will find children almost naked, they eat, drink and sleep in the streets. The people there are famous foe joking and jesting, as everyone there are called by different names other than their real names that describe their characters, like: "El Aqra'a" (the bald headed), "El Atrash" (the deaf), "El Mokhber" (informer), "El A'awar" (one-eyed), "Thu El Qarnein" (horn headed), "El Habla" (the idiot), "El Abeeta" (the stupid) and many other names, but the most famous personality in the village was "Za'bolla" the educated who is aware of everything outside the village. He used to sit around an open area where they store grain (field) after drinking "Booza" (wine) and smoking "Kolla" (marijuana) thinking out loud, cursing all rulers and kings and criticizing everyone, and the children would gather around him and cheer "Za'bolla El Kolla". Za'bolla used to roam the village telling stories about the Ottomans, the English and the Americans, cursing every race that wants to invade or occupy El Faqrana village and humiliate its' people, he gives a big speech about the independence of the village.
This is what happens usually, till a visitor from Abul Orreif village came, he was called "El Aqra'a" the king of sesame, he has convinced Za'bolla to nominate himself in the elections, he has convinced him that he is a leader and that El Faqrana village must be represented in the parliament, as people in other villages live a luxurious life, adequate working chances, clean food and suitable housing. Za'bolla believed him, and after they have prepared the necessary papers which El Aqra'a will bear and present to the formal authorities so that Za'bolla could run the elections, they found that it is useful to coordinate Adeela's son "El Mokhber" to spread rumors about Za'bolla's qualification and competence in negotiation so that the people of El Faqrana could receive their rights. El Mokhber has started hanging up signs, paintings and papers made by El Aqra'a, and spreading rumors about the brave Za'bolla and the heroes of El Faqrana who fought the invaders and won in the battle of "Deil El Kalb" (the dog's tail), among these signs we found:
"the brave people of El Faqrana support Za'bolla the educated man who is aware of everything", "El Faqrana people adjure the people of the surrounding villages to support Za'bolla", "the son of the district the clean handed who defends the rights of women and children adjures you to choose him, as he is better than thers, and those that you know are better than those that you don't"
El Faqrana people have stood and watched what El Aqra'a has called "the experience of practicing new democracy". On the day of the elections, El Aqra'a has spread representatives in the committees writing notes about the open curtains, the council's employees sitting around the big man "the head of the committee" allowing people not from El Faqrana to vote and th big man leaving the committee to take a quick nap, closing the committee and then coming back to find that the box has been filled, looks like that El Aqra'a is bribing th employees to make people sign on the "crescent symbol". At the end of the day, the boxes have been transported out of El Faqrana, this day was a pleasant day for these people, as all of them have received meals and a sum of 100 pounds distributed by El Aqra'a. when the time of announcing the results came, El Faqrana people gathered, and a big man with many people around him came, he was counting papers with symbols. He was counting votes in the sorting process saying "El Aqra'a 5, Zabolla 3, Ibn El Hint 2, El Abeeta 1" and so on. The people said "did anyone see the symbol that he has voted for?" Then suddenly they found cheering, noise and celebration revealing that El Aqra'a has won and Za'bolla has lost, Za'bolla was surprised and shouted with astonishment "I didn't know that El Aqra'a has entered the elections". The people said "of course, he did, as he is the crescent and you are the bucket", "then how come did he help me by spending money and hanging up signs for me?" said Za'bolla, "it is only for showing off and to fritter voices idiot, so there can be some competition" said El Bors, "the people have voted for me anyway, and I was supposed to win" said Za'bolla, "how many votes did you receive?" said the people, "about 10 thousand, and El Aqra'a received only 5" saod Za'bolla, "don't lie man, we heard the big man say that El Aqra'a has received 50 thousand votes, and then maybe he added a zero by mistake, God knows, may God compensate you Za'bolla" said El Sohon,
Suddenly, cars of El Aqra'a started roaming the villages declaring that El Aqra'a "the king of sesame" has won the membership of the people's council, thanking the people for their support and promising them to be forgotten till the next electoral round.
The people of El Faqrana will live joking about what happened to Za'bolla and waiting with great passion and strong enthusiasm for the next 5 years to pass, so that they could once again enjoy the taste of meat and enjoy the value of their votes, priced by El Aqra'a and those like him with a sum of 100 pounds, long live democracy.
In a sad scene, Za'bolla stood in grief crying, then he said to the people "maybe I lost, but i'm satisfied with the honor of trying", El Faqry replied "losers always say that".
In order not to be the laughingstock of the days, we must learn a lesson from the story of Za'bolla and El Faqrana people, which is know how and who to choose to represent us in any governmental body, so that we could live a decent life.
