Even water kills our children

LCHR received the news of poisoned children in Aswan due to water on 20th of May 2002. It was a shock to know that water killed a child girl and harmed other 11, while officials, bothered by the accident, made an intentional hiding from media. Families decided to prevent their children from going to school because of the accident, and the laboratory report assured that the severe pollution in water killed Marian Labeeb, a nine-years-old girl, and caused different injuries to other 11 children.

People assured to LCHR that they suffer bad water all the time and many times they find that the water becomes blue or black and is full of insects as if it does not get through water stations.

It is to be mentioned that the drinking water is one of the eternal problems in Egypt. The water used in drinking in Egypt causes slow and instant death for all Egyptians, especially in Shoubra El-Kheima, Fayyoum and Menoufeyya.

The father of Marian assured that the governmental negligence is the direct reason for the death of his child. He said that her mother said we should not let her to school but I insisted on taking her to school because it is her right. Now I feel that I took her to her death.

Citizens now lost their trust in government and tried to kill the future of their children and prevent them from going to school instead of letting them die. LCHR hopes that all concerned authorities will protect our children and supervise water stations.
