Al Qadaby lands lie fallow and the irrigation officials violate the law without being punished
The Center received complaints from the farmers of Al Qadaby village, Al Fushn, Bany Swief and surrounding villages. They state in their complaints that their lands don't receive any irrigation water that used to reach them from El Funt waterway that was redirected to irrigate Malata village, Menya in violation to the irrigation law, which led to decreasing the share of irrigation water reaching Al Qadaby village and the surrounding villages leading to the stagnation of their lands. The farmers say that irrigation water has been cut off since July 2009 till today.
One of the farmers provided 3 carats of land to build a big irrigation machine that can suck water from the Nile. This project was approved by the former Bany Swief Governor, but the project was stopped for no clear reason. The farmers presented complaints to the governorate and the Minister of Irrigation to be allowed to complete the project, but there was no response to their demands, which is threatening the life of their lands that represent their only resource for livelihood.
The LCHR sees that the negligence of the Ministry of Irrigation in connecting, maintaining and cleaning waterways and the lack of clear planning has become a habit of the Ministry, which threatens the future of plantations and agriculture in Egypt, and the deterioration of farmers' conditions and rights.
The LCHR presents these complaints to the Minister of Irrigation and Bany Swief Governor to allow the farmers to complete their irrigation project and save their lands from being ruined, as a guarantee to their right to adequate and clean irrigation water, and protect their right to safe farming.
