Who can obligate the state corporations to fulfill their commitments towards small farmers?
The LCHR has received dozens of complaints from small farmers from Mubarak's national project for graduate youths in Amereya – Alexandria. They are complaining from the bad agricultural drainage system that is unfinished for three years now and resulting into the increase of the level of underground water on their lands, leading to the ruin of their crops and lands, especially that these farmers are obligated to pay their land installments to the bank for development and agrarian trust, which exposes them to the threat of imprisonment and the displacement of their families.
These farmers have sent complaints to the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and other different officials to work on fixing the agricultural drainage system in the area, but to no avail, which made the farmers also demand the amendments of the law to punish governmental employees for their negligence and lack of responsibility.
The LCHR sees that such negligence and lack of responsibility deserves to pay compensations to these farmers and relief them of paying the ret of the installments to the bank for development and agrarian trust.
The LCHR is preparing a challenge to obligate the Ministries of Agriculture and Irrigation to fix the agricultural drainage system and demands the officials to quickly interfere to stop the imprisonment of small farmers and the displacement of their families and to stop agricultural lands from being wasted. It also demands the members of the People's Assembly and the Shura Council to amend the law in order to obligate governmental bodies to fulfill their obligations and maintain water and agricultural resources.
The LCHR also call all civil society organizations to unite in solidarity with these farmers and guarantee their rights to suitable working opportunities and safe land possession.
