Women are even deprived of their right to inheritance
A woman states that she and her children inherited a house and a piece of land from her deceased husband. She was surprised with her husband's brothers with the help of some policemen attempting to throw her and her children out of the house and ruining the plantations. They even forged a police report against her to force her to relinquish the house and the piece of land. She bled to them to leave her and her children in the house and take the land, but they wanted both. And now she is asking, who help her and her children from vagrancy?
Another woman states that she has inherited two and a half carats of land from her deceased father. Although she has official documents proving her right, her nephews refused to give her share. She tried to sell her share, but no one dare to buy it. Her father died and her her brothers as well, and her nephews are controlling the inheritance. She can't find anyone to help her in this matter.
These are but simple examples of what women face when it comes to inheritance in rural Egypt. The LCHR sees that there is a necessity to issue new legislations that guarantee women their right to inheritance based on the criteria of justice and equality. The LCHR demands the Minister of the Interior and the Attorney General to protect women from the tyranny of their male relatives.
The LCHR also calls all women rights foundations to adopt a new project that guarantees women their rights to safety, freedom and equality.
