Questions that seem naive!!
Why and for the benefit of whom are farmers being displaced and impoverished?
54 farmers and their families were expelled from their lands and homes in spite of judicial rulings in their favor which gives them the right to cultivate their land and to housing! The farmers submitted a copy of the court ruling which was issued in their favor against the governor of El-Wadi El-Gadied and which cancels the governor's Resolution No. 7 of 2007, and gives them the right to own their lands and houses, to the LCHR. The court ruling stated that the farmers had applied for settlement in the new village in the governorate of El-Wadi El-Gadied, and that they were each given a piece of agricultural land and a house, after they met the terms for receiving a land and a house... But the governor reissued a new decision which amended the conditions for the benefit of a group of influential people. And since this new decision is in violation of the law the LCHR filed a challenge against it before the Administrative Judiciary Court of Assiut. But despite a ruling in favor of the farmers, the governor refused to carry out the sentence and used police forces to expel the farmers from the land and the houses. He has also cut off water from the main canals, so that the farmers may not be bale to cultivate their lands.
The LCHR submits the complaints of the farmers, to the governor asking him to cancel his decision and resettle the farmers in the land and the houses as they are citizens who have a right to a decent living in this country and the right to share wealth and revenues with the governor and people of influence. the LCHR also demands that the governor stops the oppression and corruption of some governorate employees, and the persecution and ill-treatment of farmers, and to compensate them for the wrong that has been done to them as a result of the violation of their rights and the lack of respect for the provisions of the law, in order to ensure the application of the rules of justice and safety provided by the Constitution and the Egyptian law.
The LCHR calls upon the members of the People's Assembly, Shura Council and civil society organizations to unit in solidarity with the El-Wadi Elgaded farmers in order to enable them to cultivate their land and to live in their houses, and to pressure the governor to cancel his new decision and implement the court rulings, to ensure the rights of farmers to a safe cultivation of land and a safe and dignified livelihood in our beloved Egypt!!.
