What can temporary workers do against the violations of their rights to safe work by the state institutions?
The Land Center For Human Rights has received dozens of complaints from the train drivers of the refineries and sugar factories in Deshna stating that they have been working with the company for nearly twenty years, and in every year, during those twenty years, they have filed a request to be full time workers, but the company refuses their demands under the pretext that the Holding Company, which the sugar company is a subsidiary of, rejects any new appointments, and not only that but that it is willing to respond to requests of workers, who wish to exit on early retirement, to exit from the company. Lately, the drivers were surprised to find that the company management has appointed train drivers without the announcement of a contest, and without informing the members of the company or giving any consideration to their right to be appointed, as they have been working with the company for nearly twenty years ...
The LCHR asserts that the conditions of temporary workers in the companies of the business sector is a matter that requires the intervention of state officials, who are capable of issuing immediate resolutions for their appointment. The state institutions must not violate the law, as there are millions of workers who have been employed for more than ten years in state institutions as temporary workers, despite the fact that they work full time jobs, which is in contrary to the law of social and health insurance and business sector law No. 203, which stipulates that any work that is characterized by being continuous and which has lasted for more than one year, should be considered a full time job, regardless of the type of contract. The LCHR confirms that the conditions of employment of temporary workers are extremely bad. There is no union protection, as the law does not allow them to be members in the different trade unions and as they do not have insurance or any kind of protection for their health and social rights.
The LCHR presents the complaints of the workers to the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Sugar Company and the Holding Company, to appoint the train drivers of the farms of Deshna according to the law.
The LCHR also demands that the civil society organizations unite in solidarity with the temporary workers in order to ensure their rights to a decent work and a dignified life.
