Riverside farmers search for their safety
The LCHR has received dozens of complaints from the farmers of Naqnaq Island and East Samanhoud– Qena governorate. Those people complaint about the corrode of their riverside lands, which they have rented from the state property corporation. After the establishment of the electricity charging project, the water level has increased in the river, which have led to the corrode of the farmers lands on the riverside.
The farmers presented complaints to the Ministry of Irrigation, which have formed a committee to investigate this matter. The farmers were surprised with the Ministry padding the lands of some influential and rich farmers and leaving the lands of the rest of the small farmers.
The farmers complain about their extreme losses, as they pay 650 pounds per feddan as yearly rent, and the corrode of their land has made them unable to pay their yearly rent, in addition to their crop losses and decrease of production.
The LCHR has also received complaints from the farmers of Deer El Barsha – Menya governorate. These farmers complain about the high rental values of their riverside lands. As some areas pay rental values more than other areas, considering that all riverside lands have the same quality.
The LCHR presents farmers complaints to the Ministry of Irrigation to pad the riverside lands of Qena farmers as protection from being corroded. The LCHR also demands the state property corporation to relieve the farmers from paying the rents of the corroded lands and compensate them for their losses because of the negligence of the Ministry of irrigation. The LCHR also demands the state property corporation to provide Menya farmers with equal rental values, in order to guarantee farmers rights to safety and decent living.
