Who will protect the farmers and stop their humiliation and eviction out of their lands?
In a sudden development of the conflict between the farmers and Kafr El Zayat real estate company over the ownership of a piece of land with an area of one thousand feddans in Berket Ghattas and Kafr El Dawwar in Behira governorate, the bureau of investigation in these villages have summoned hundreds of farmers to force them to sign a cession of this land, but the conflict was not settled yet.
LCHR sees that the interference of the police and its partiality for the favor of the company owners will increase violence and violations against farmers rights. Police forces have threatened and intimidated the farmers that if they didn't sign the cessions, they will be arrested and detained, or they will be evicted out of their land by force. The company owners have forged an ownership contract to this land, filed a lawsuit against the farmers and extracted a court order no. 644/28 judicial to evict them out of this land, which violate law no 84 for the year 1975 and citizens rights to personal safety and safe land possession, but the farmers have challenged this decision with lawsuit no. 527/1996, which they have won confirming the invalidity of the company's ownership contract. Despite that, the company owners have offered the land for sale based on the null court order that they have extracted and the farmers have challenged.
LCHR has presented farmers complaints to the Prime Minister, the Prosecutor General, the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of the Interior to stop these arbitrary procedures, enable the farmers of farming their land, stop the police threats to their freedom and guarantee their right to safe land possession. LCHR also adjures all CSOs to unite in solidarity with these farmers to guarantee their right to a safe and decent life.
