Agricultural unions and the hope for change
The Land Center for Human Rights held a training Workshop on 18/04/2011 at the Centre in Cairo, and it was attended by 23 farmers from the associations of Small farmers of Alabaadi village, Fayoum Governorate and Garar and El Hamraa El Qeblya, Behira Governorate. The first session was about the right to organize and the role of trade unions of farmers in supporting the rights of peasants in safe agriculture and decent living.
Then the audience were divided into two workshops and their discussions were about the objectives of the agricultural trade unions which were identified by the participants in the following as follows:
1 - To improve the conditions of small farmers in living stones.
2 - Ownership of land farmed by peasants and put their hands out of tens of years
3 - Fair marketing of agricultural crops.
4 - Providing support requirements of agricultural production
5 – The efficiency of public services, drinking water and irrigation water for farmers and their land.
The workshop discussed the member of small farmers union specifications and were as follows:
1 - To be the author of the hand over the farmland and the basic profession of agriculture.
2 - Holding more than three acres
3 - To be a member of the Board of Directors of the Assembly of an agricultural cooperative or an NGO or a local council or a member of the National Party dissolved.
4 - Not under the age of 18 years and not more than fifty years
5 - To commit to the objectives of the Association and pay annual subscription.
The workshop discussed devices union and the role of the General Assembly and the Board of Directors, in addition to the discussion of the recent session of the steps that must be adopted by each union until the completion of establishment procedures to start an activity plan for achieving the objectives of the union to defend their interests and rights of its members in agriculture, safe and decent living.
