October workers face displacement because of the misuse of the law

On 15/1/2008, LCHR has held a symposium with some workers from Karmen Company, El Tatbeqyeen Company and other companies from the area at the headquarter of the 6th of October Worker’s Union in Giza. The symposium was about raising workers’ awareness about their legal rights to fair salaries, holidays, social security and health insurance.
The meeting discussed workers’ conditions in the 6th of October City related to their problems with the administrations of their companies that do not allow them to establish syndicate committees and violate their rights to salaries and financial dues, also the absence of inspection by the labor office and health insurance corporation, which negatively affects their rights to safety, professional health and decent work conditions.
The meeting has also discussed how to improve the internal work conditions inside these companies and how could workers cooperate among each other to change the laws and establish a social balance between them and the work owners.
Most of the discussion have focused on how to use the legal methods to enable workers of guaranteeing their rights, like presenting complaints to the labor office and the insurance corporation and collective negotiations with the administrations of their companies to grant their demands and improve their conditions.
The meeting has also discussed the obstacles that can stand against workers strive to obtain their legal rights, like threatening, ill-treatment and firing and how to stop these violations.
The discussions asserted the necessity of uniting in solidarity with the workers to improve their conditions. The attendances agreed that the LCHR coordinates work among them to improve their work and syndicates conditions.
